What is a Cégep?

In Québec, maple syrup is not the only unique thing around here, there is also the concept of a Cégep. This public educational institution is a general and vocational college, the first level of higher education in the province. A Cégep serves double duty, it offers specific programs whereby a student can go to university or enter the job market after graduation.

Pre-university education

Equivalent to the baccalauréat général, the pre-university education prepares students for university. The pre-university program is two years and leads to a Diploma of College Studies (DSC), better known by its French name and acronym, Diplôme d’études collégiales (DEC). If you already have a baccalauréat général, you are not required to complete the pre-university program to enter university or a technical training program in CEGEP.

Technical training

Technical training is intended to prepare students for the job market and turn them into professional technicians. These are three-year programs that are equivalent to the BAC+2 level. Completion of the program will lead to a technical DCS, a diploma that is comparable to the brevet de technicien supérieur (BTS), diplôme universitaire de technologie (DUT) or diplôme de technicien spécialisé (DTS). On the Montréal job market, job placement rates for this stream are higher than 80% in several programs of study. It is also possible to pursue university studies following technical training.
